Once there was a single kingdom: Orenmark. The Four Breaths that ran beneath its soil — Flame, Glacier, Lightning and Poison — fed its fields and gave its smiths the art of binding the elements into metal. When the Breaths began to fade, the kingdom's greatest master tried to bind all four at once. He struck; the veins opened, but they left behind a bottomless wound that split the continent from north to south.
